About Modifyre
Our story, our principles, and our community.
Our Philosophy
We aim to create a temporary village built on a gift economy, fuelled by communal effort, lit with radical thinking, and filled with participatory art, theme camps, performance, workshops, music and, of course, fire.
At the heart of this village is the Bug, pollinating the seeds of our imagination. When the Bug burns these seeds are spread far and wide, helping creativity blossom wherever they land. When we leave, we dismantle and take the village with us back to our everyday lives.
Unlike many events, Modifyre is not created by a production company. At our event, there are no corporate sponsors, stalls, exchanges of money, or spectators.
The 10 Principles
Modifyre, like all Burning Man regional events, is guided by the 10 Principles. These principles are not rules but a shared ethos that shapes our community and event.
- Radical Inclusion — Anyone may be a part of Modifyre. No prerequisites exist for participation.
- Gifting — We encourage the spirit of unconditional gifting.
- Decommodification — Our community resists the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.
- Radical Self-reliance — We encourage individuals to discover, exercise and rely on their inner resources.
- Radical Self-expression — Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual.
- Communal Effort — We value creative cooperation and collaboration.
- Civic Responsibility — We value civil society and care for our community spaces.
- Leaving No Trace — Our community respects the environment and leaves no physical trace.
- Participation — Transformative change can occur only through deeply personal participation.
- Immediacy — Immediate experience is the most important touchstone of our culture.
History
Modifyre has been Queensland and Northern NSW's regional Burning Man event since 2013. Through the years, we have built amazing effigies and temples, forged unique traditions, and overcome huge obstacles with grace and grit.
We have made a name for ourselves in the Burnerverse and built a strong community that loves to celebrate together.
Acknowledgement
Modifyre acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land on which we gather — the Bigambul people of Yelarbon, Queensland — and pays respect to their Elders past, present, and emerging.
